Arizona Approaches to Pandemics, Lung & Sleep (AAPLS)
Research Career Training Program
The primary objective of the Arizona Approaches to Pandemics, Lung & Sleep (AAPLS) program is to provide advanced research training experiences and long-term mentoring in an interprofessional environment to qualified candidates -- junior faculty and transitioning postdoctoral scientists from various backgrounds in the biomedical sciences. AZ-PRIME will nationally recruit eligible and qualified individuals and provide them with advanced training experiences and long-term mentoring that will enable them to develop a research program and work with their home institution to obtain NIH funding and develop their career and gain leadership skills.
AAPLS Mentees will receive training that facilitates successful team science career development.
Training will include Didactic instruction in:
- Grantsmanship (NIH Style writing, and reviewing grants)
- Scientific Writing, Presentations, and Bioethics
- Advanced Research Methodology (Tailored to trainee needs) in the following content areas:
- Community-Based Participatory Research, Design & Analysis of Health Outcomes & Effectiveness Research, Basic and Advanced
- Epidemiological/Bio-statistical Methods, Transomics and Biomarker discovery, Data-science and machine learning, Wearables and devices
- Interprofessional Career/Leadership Development
- Structured Mentoring by a team of content experts
- Research experience with mentor/instructor support in:
- Conceptualization, Design, Implementation, Analysis, Reporting
- Writing workshops:
- Abstract/Poster/Audiovisual content writing, Scientific publications, Research report composition, Dissemination strategies

The AAPLS program will provide advanced research career training in lung and sleep-related breathing disorders.

- Summer Institute I – Tucson, AZ (July/Aug 2026)
- Mentoring and Didactic Instruction (ongoing)
- Mid-Year Visit – Tucson, AZ (January 2027)
- Annual Meeting for PRIME Scholars – Bethesda, MD (Spring 2027)
- Summer Institute II – Tucson, AZ (July 2027)
Eligibility
Junior Faculty members in the biomedical sciences workforce.
