RESEARCH METHODS

A coordinated platform for consultation and training programs for clinical and translational research. SW CACTI provides resources that are needed to establish new research projects, and also to increase the impact of existing programs. Support is available to faculty, trainees, staff, and community partners for SW CACTI projects.

analytics Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design (BERD)

The Biostatistics Core offers insight about study design, biostatistics, and basic data management for effective research. Biostatistics consultation and services, courses for researchers at all levels, and novel tools and methods to conduct clinical and translational research. Our goal is to provide accessible services, user-friendly courses, and innovative tools to address methodological challenges in clinical and translational research.

  • Preliminary Review
    • Estimated Hours: 1 – 2 Hours
      Pre-funding, pre-data collection overview of how a project may be designed
      *Please note that this would occur before the project begins, and a new form would need to be completed once data is collected and ready to be reviewed in order to get your project back in the queue.
  • Statistical/Data Analysis Plan
    • Estimated Hours: 5-20 Hours
      Develop a proposed plan for data analysis based on project information and protocol.
  • Power Calculation
    • Estimated Hours: 5-10 Hours
      Calculate the power limitations of an existing sample.
  • Statistical/Data Analysis Plan + Sample Size Estimate
    • Estimated Hours: 10-30 Hours
      Provide a data analysis plan and an estimate of the required sample size for potential significant results.
  • Data Analysis
    • Estimated Hours: 15-100 Hours
      Conduct statistical analysis in provided data.
  • Manuscript Writing/Reviewing Assistance
    • Estimated Hours: 10-60 Hours
      Assist in writing/editing methods and results sections for abstracts, posters, presentations, and manuscripts, as well as responding to reviewers' comments.
  • Request Biostatistical Support
    • Completion of BERD Biostatistician Information Request form is necessary to join the first-come, first-serve queue for consultation.
    • Avoid contacting any biostatisticians directly for scheduling.
    • Request support as early as possible in the protocol development process, especially for grant applications (at least 6 weeks ahead of internal grant deadlines).
    • Larger data sets may require additional time for analysis.

  • Requests are processed on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  • Once your request is received, we will contact you based on the availability of our biostatisticians to schedule an initial consultation.
  • Bring clear articulation of your study question, relevant papers on similar variables, and any pilot data you may have.

receipt_longBilling Policy

  • Invoicing requires two index numbers (primary and secondary).
  • All billable work is charged at a rate of $109/hour.
  • SW CACTI faculty investigators receive 5 hours of SW CACTI-funded consultation per calendar year.
  • Service hours beyond the SW CACTI-sponsored hours will be billed accordingly.

article_personAuthorship Policy

  • If SW CACTI biostatistical support meets the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) criteria, the biostatistician should be acknowledged as a co-author.
  • For grants developed with BERD biostatistical support, the level of biostatistician involvement should be discussed and agreed upon between the PI and the biostatistician.
